FTP Client

What is an FTP Client?

An FTP Client is a program that allows you to transfer files from your local computer to a web server.

Recommended Clients

We recommend FileZilla for your FTP needs. FileZilla is a free program distributed under the GNU license that can be freely downloaded. It is rich in features and easily suit the needs of Member Guardian.

Important Concepts

Uploading Files

To upload files, you simply need to drag and drop them from the left (local computer panel) to the right (web server panel). You can confirm that the files were successfully transferred by clicking the "Successful Transfer" tab at the bottom of the screen.

File Permissions

File permissions set the "rights" for who can use, alter, or access a file on your web server. For most files, you won't need to worry about this, but for some you may need to change the permissions to 777 or 755.

  1. In FileZilla, connect to your website's FTP. If you are unsure what your FTP credentials are, you will need to contact your web hosting provider for this information.
  2. Once connected, right click the file/folder that you are changing permissions for, the same way you would any file on your local computer.
  3. Select "File Permissions..."
  4. Input the permission value where it says "Numerical Value"
  5. Click "OK" to save the changes
